James Gogo & The Gogosimo band


Marcus James Jozee, known as James Gogo is a multi-talented musician and vocalist. James, of Congolese, French and Kenyan heritage was raised in the coastal town of Mombasa, Kenya. His late father was a Jazz saxophone player, and it was he who introduced James to music at a tender age. Music became his passion, starting with the saxophone, then drums and piano, before he finally majored in classical piano.

His musical journey started in the year 2000 when he was a pianist in a band called Safari Sounds before venturing out in 2002 to form a duo singing group and his own seven piece band called Gogosimo, where he is the lead vocalist, composer, lyricist, producer and director.

James who draws his inspiration from his father, Stevie Wonder, Oscar Patterson and Kenya’s own Mzee Ngala, released his first album titled “Susan and James Gogosimo” in 2004. He went on to record another 5 albums and is just released his 7th  in October 2018.

He calls his Original music Afro Smooth Sounds; easy listening and danceable, it is a rich blend of coastal music, African beats and western instrumentals creating a unique East African sound. He also does conversions of different genres of music from soul to jazz, rhumba, salsa, afro-beat, funk, pop and soft rock.

James has performed in various stages locally and internationally. He has also performed alongside greats such as Salif Keita, Koffi Olomide, Hugh Masekela, Isaiah Katumwa, Richard Bona, the latePapa Wemba and Bono. He is looking forward to performing at the inaugural Uteo Africa Festival.
