Edith WeUtonga


Edith weUtonga is a ground breaking, cutting edge bassist, singer and songwriter leading her Utonga band. Her style is an authentically Zimbabwean sound laced with Jiti, Chimurenga and Shona folk. She experiments with some of her favourite World music flavours such as Rhumba, Reggae Calypso and Jazz. She formed Utonga in 2010 and quickly released her debut album in that year – a ten track effort titled UTONGA. This album catapulted her to being one of Zimbabwe’s most recognized musicians and featured at some of the country top live events.

Notable to her festival performances, would be her headline act at the 2012 INTWASA Festival ko Bulawayo, 2013 Women in Jazz, Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA), main stage act of 2012 as well as her Global Stage collaboration with Busi Ncube at the same Festival in 2013.

In 2013, Edith released her second album KWACHA and went on to become one of Zimbabwe’s leading musical lights with a crossover appeal. Edith has been nominated twice for Best Female Musician, at Zimbabwe’s premier Awards National Arts Merit Awards, as well as the Zimbabwe Music Awards. In 2014, Edith featured at the Closing Show of the Harare International Festival of the Arts, alongside Oliver Mtukudzi and Senegalese star Ismaël Lô. She has also collaborated with US based soft rock band Publish The Quest, on their Different Kind Of Gold album. In 2016 Edith recorded a duet with James Gogosimo – yet to be released.

Edith has also performed at the Sanganai/Hlanganani Expo (2013), a premiere Cultural event hosted by the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority.

To show off her versatility as a performing artist, Edith starred in a one woman musical theatre show called The Comeback 2012, for which she bagged the Best Actress (Theatre) award at the National Arts Merit Awards.

Ultimately Edith would love to collaborate with Congolese musician Fally Ipupa and the Malian husband and wife duo of Amadou and Miriam.

She is currently serving as National Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Musicians’ Union (ZiMU). She has participated in numerous charity and awareness Campaigns. To date Edith has performed in India, South Africa, Kenya and Uganda.
